Back to School for E-Invoicing: What SMBs Should Tackle Before September 2027

September has a way of resetting the clock. Kids go back to school, inboxes fill up after the summer lull, and finance and compliance teams return to a to-do list that didn’t take a vacation with them. This year, that list has a new line item for companies doing business in France: as of September 1, 2026, large and mid-sized companies must be able to receive electronic invoices, and the largest among them must also issue e-invoices and transmit the related e-reporting data.

If your business falls into the small and medium-sized category (PME – petite et moyenne entreprise), you have until September 1, 2027. A year can look like a lot of runway from here. It isn’t, once you account for the time it actually takes to select an accredited platform, connect it to your ERP or accounting system, and test the invoice flows before they go live. The first day of class already happened. Here’s what it taught us.

France did not postpone its e-invoicing reform. Large and mid-sized companies crossed the September 1, 2026 threshold as planned, and the French administration paired the go-live with a pragmatic stance: companies acting in good faith, and actively working through implementation issues, would not face immediate sanctions for teething problems. We covered what that means in detail in France E-Invoicing 2026: What Happens If You’re Not Ready by September 1?, but the short version is this: the deadline was real, the tolerance was for genuine, demonstrable effort, not for companies that hadn’t started.

That distinction matters for the SMB cohort now preparing for 2027. The companies that had the smoothest September 1 were the ones that had already chosen a Plateforme Agréée (PA), mapped their invoicing formats, and tested their flows well before the deadline arrived. We’ve supported government and enterprise e-invoicing mandates for over a decade, and the lesson holds every time: reliability comes from starting the integration work early, not from rushing it in the final quarter.

The SMB study list: what to do between now and next September

A year sounds long until you break it into the actual steps. • Select an accredited Plateforme Agréée (PA) rather than waiting to see how the market shakes out.
• Map your current invoicing and accounting formats against what the PA and the French e-invoicing ecosystem require.
• Connect that platform to your existing ERP or accounting system, inbound and outbound.
• Test your invoice and e-reporting flows early enough to fix problems before they become deadline problems.
• Give your finance and AP/AR teams time to adjust to the new process, not just the new software.
