IDOC

What is IDOC?

IDOC stands for intermediate document. It’s a standard format in electronic data interchange. It’s either used for popular SAP business system or for an SAP application and an external program. IDOC is very similar to XML. They share the same purposes: data exchange and automation in computer systems. But their syntax is different, there are different types of IDOCs transactions.

IDOC is used for asynchronous transactions which means that they exist as self-contained text files that can be transmitted to the requesting workstation without connecting to the central database.
