3M allows customers worldwide to integrate using EDI
3M integrates both with their suppliers and their customers but the integrations are not the same (see 3M’s supplier integration).
3M has every reason to want to set up automated document exchanges with their customers. This is why they are very flexible and offer multiple solutions for their clients to integrate with them. That being said, the technologies they support differ depending on your location and your industry. Your 3M contact person should be able to assist you in choosing the most suitable technology. For this reason, it’s possible they will directly fit into your technology landscape without any additional software at all. There are nonetheless a few reasons that could encourage you to opt for a third party even if the technology gap isn’t significant:
- you require a third party for other connections already: for maintainability it can be interesting to keep all your connection effort in one location
- your message format or technology is very specific: 3M may not integrate properly with your software and you’d rather have the customisations under your control than depend on their EDI team.
- you foresee to change your own software at some point mid or long term: you would like to avoid creating technical dependencies with external companies knowing you will have to migrate them eventually.
- no two EDI implementations are identical and chances are you will have to tailor your messages to 3M’s requirements even if you use the same message format (X12, Edifact, UBL…): you may be looking for a mapping tool to easily adapt your messages on the fly
