sFTP stands for secure file transfer protocol. An sFTP is created by someone who ‘hosts’ an sFTP. This is known as an ‘sFTP Server’ This is a file directory that they make available to external parties. Each party is given a username and password to connect to the server. The partner is known as an ‘sFTP Client’. Once connected, the external can either put files onto the server or pull files off of the server, depending on what both parties intend to do.
For sFTP, there is an added layer of security beyond just a username and password. The Client party gives a key certificate to the Server party. When clients attempt to connect to an sFTP server, they must present with it their public key which is then validated by the server. This ensures authenticity of the connecting party and results in a more secure connection.
This depends largely on the software used to setup an sFTP connection and if you are intending to setup an sFTP Server or just an sFTP Client connection. There are usually many steps to setting up a server that entail setting up the location of the server, what files are accessible, and what users will have access to the server.
After a server is setup, both parties must exchange information, including user details, passwords, and public keys. The client will provide their public key to the server, allowing the server to accept their credentials whenever they attempt to connect.
In Babelway, the setup is as easy as pressing a button. Both sFTP Client and sFTP Servers are available in Babelway. For a server, all you have to define is the username and password that you’ll give to your partner to send you files and then upload the public key that they will give you. For a client, all you have to define is the server address, the username, and password, all of which would be given to you by your partner if they were hosting the server. Then you would provide them with a public key that is accessible within Babelway.
