What is X12?

ASC X12 , also called ANSI ASC X12,  is a standard definition for EDI document exchanges. Most commonly used in the US, it has grown to over 300 defined transaction sets for business communication in industries such as healthcare, transportation, government, finance and more.

Most companies will have an X12 specification document that will outline the detailed intricacies of the files they will be sending. This is a useful reference to use when questions arise during X12 setup with a trading partner. Each transaction will be different and multiple transactions may be used depending on the business requirements. Each transaction has an assigned number, for example Invoice: 810; Purchase Order: 850; Advanced Shipping Notice: 856.

Example X12 document

X12 documents consist of main parts, segments and elements. Each line in the document begins with a 3 letter segment. This is standardized across the industry, so each company understands the meaning of the line. For example, the BIG segment will always indicate basic information about an invoice, such as an invoice number and date.

Within each line, there are different elements in sequential order, separated by a repeating character (usually * but it can be others). These elements hold data that is pre-defined, BIG01 is an invoice date, BIG02 is an invoice number, etc.

Here is how the document looks in Babelway

Babelway organizes the X12 fields in a readable manner, making it easy for anyone to understand what each field means in the file. This gives you the power to have a deep understanding of the X12 data without any previous knowledge of X12.
